- W2023894578 abstract "In recent the United States and the Soviet Union have repeatedly accused each other of relentlessly expanding and modernizing their military forces and presence in the Pacific region. most far-reaching military development of recent years, says the Reagan Administration, been the dramatic increase of Soviet power in East Asia and the Pacific and the Indian Oceans.1 The Soviets have returned the compliment; as one commentator put it, Striving for military superiority, the U.S. imperialists have overtly embarked, since the second half of the 1970s, on a dangerous road of speeding up the naval arms race in the Pacific region.2 While such accusations and counter-accusations may seem to be a propaganda exercise, they are indicative of significant new trends in the military situation in the Pacific. During the past decade, the Pacific has become an arena for intensified military competition between the superpowers. This paper will look at the nature and dimensions of this competition, the trends in the superpower force structures, changes in their warfighting strategies and the major factors affecting the military balance between them in the region. It addresses two particularly important issues: whether the Soviet military buildup in the Asia-Pacific region has been prompted by an offensive strategy, as alleged by the Reagan Administration; and whether the military balance in the Pacific has actually shifted in favour of the Soviet Union as a result of its buildup during the past decade." @default.
