- W2023941990 abstract "Eight cases ranging from low-to-high-grade chondrosarcoma were examined by both light and electron microscopy. The light microscopic criteria used for grading and prognosis correlated well with the ultramorphological findings. Low-grade tumors with a favorable prognosis generally showed little nuclear atypia; the chromatin pattern was fine, and usually only one small nucleolus was evident. Cytoplasmic changes such as the accumulation of glycogen particles, lipid droplets, and dilation of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) cisternae, which were found in these chondrosarcomas have also been reported in a variety of benign cartilaginous conditions as well as in normal hyaline cartilage cells. Grade II and Grade III chondrosarcoma cells were characterized by more pronounced nuclear atypia, a coarse chromatin pattern, and one or more prominent nucleoli. Similar nuclear changes, however, could also be seen in benign chondroblastoma cells. Gross dilation of RER cisternae and glycogen particles were much less conspicuous, but lipid droplets and cytoplasmic filaments were considerably increased in number in higher grade chondrosarcoma. Rare giant and spindle-shaped cells with highly convoluted nuclei were also noted. The above cellular changes, including stromal invasion, signified a poor prognosis. In this study the poorly differentiated tumor had more ultrastructural features in common with spindle-cell sarcomas of the fibroblastic type." @default.
