- W2023983703 abstract "Simulation is an effective tool in improving residents' surgical skills. Due to duty hour restrictions and numerous demands on trainees' time, the difficulty lies in getting trainees into the simulation lab. The objective was to study whether monthly emails would improve trainees' utilization and performance on the simulation lab. Residents and Urogynecology fellows from each PGY level were divided randomly into an intervention and control group. Trainees in the email group were sent monthly progress updates. Trainees in the control group received none. The simulation center is connected to the hospital, accessible to trainees 24 hours a day. The laparoscopic simulation course consists of 19 modules that must be passed before attempting the 7 exams. None The intervention group received monthly email progress updates, each detailing their score, their prior month score, the high score, and the prior month high score. Each email also included the interquartile range for all trainees' scores for comparison. Open table in a new tab Results are presented as n(%) and mean(range). In the email group, the number of trainees attempting at least one module, the average number of module attempts, the average number of module passes, and the percentage of course completed were greater than in the control group. While similar proportions in both groups attempted at least one module, more trainees in the email group progressed through the course to finish the modules and to enter the exams portion of the course. Of those who did attempt at least 1 exam, the exam scores were similar. Trainees who received monthly email updates trended toward higher utilization rates of the course. The performance scores did not differ between the groups. This study suggests that monthly email updates may have a positive impact on trainees' use of the simulation lab. Larger studies are merited to further explore this relationship." @default.
