- W2024008500 abstract "The daily rates of bone formation were determined at numerous surfaces. Thirty short-lived BNL mice ranging in age from 5 to 104 weeks were given 4 subcutaneous injections of 2.0 μCi of [3H]-proline per g of body weight on days 0, 4, 8 and 12. On day 13 the mice were killed, the maxillas were removed, and the first molars were prepared for autoradiography. The analytic data comprised autoradiographic grain counts, and micrometric analyses of widths and distances of the multiple silver bands formed over active bone surfaces. With increasing age, grain counts, band widths, distances and daily rates of bone formation diminished; however the manner in which surface activities ceased, reactivated or diminished during the life-span were peculiar to various parodontal bone surfaces. Two specific modes of bone surface activities were discovered. Alveolar bone exhibited one mode involving continued depression of activity with increasing age. The second mode occurred in basal bone and involved initial depression of activity, followed by reactivation at 1 year of age, with subsequent reduction in activity. Inter-radicular bone surfaces showed both modes." @default.
