- W2024016833 abstract "OBJECTIVE: To investigate intrusiveness longitudinally in an IVF-sample and to explore predictors and gender differences. DESIGN: Prospective study of 446 women and 387 men starting IVF-treatment at a tertiary clinic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients completed self-report questionnaires before starting IVF-treatment on perceived stress (PSS), positive states of mind (PSOM), depression (CESD), quality of marriage (QMI) and coping (Brief Cope). These measures were repeated at 4, 10 and 18 months follow-up in addition to intrusiveness (Impact of Events Scale). An independent samples T-test determined gender differences. Hierarchical multivariate regression analysis was performed to find significant predictors for intrusiveness at follow-up. RESULTS: Average IES-scores indicated a mild traumatic impact for men and women longitudinally. However, 20% of women at 4 months, 25% at 10 and 28% at 18 months had a clinical traumatic reaction (cut-off score>26) compared to 8% of men at every follow-up. Gender differences for intrusiveness were found longitudinally (p< 0.000). Baseline perceived stress, depression and coping style (self-distraction, self-blame, denial) significantly predicted intrusiveness scores at 4, 10 and 18 months follow-up (R2=0.16; R2=0.19; R2=0.26). CONCLUSION: Significant gender differences were found for intrusiveness with women typically having higher mean scores than men. Up to one third of women experience infertility as a highly intrusive event that increases over time compared to less than 10% of men. These findings corroborate the literature describing infertility as a more severe stressor for women than men. Gender and individual characteristics such as perceived stress, depression and coping style predict levels of intrusiveness over time more than relational factors. Prediction models with vulnerability and protective factors will be discussed as well as implications for clinical practice and counseling." @default.
