Forty years ago, soon after the beginning of my career, I spoke to the Renascence Society in Manhattan, and in December 1985 I spoke from personal notes on my relationship with Jacques to members of the Maritain Association in Atlanta. In that audience there were several former students and friends. The name of Jacques Maritain had counted in our friendship, and I reminded them that my friendship with Jacques had preceded by many years my friendship with them. Longevity was the explanation of this state of affairs. My first meeting with Jacques Maritain took place more than half a century earlier, at the very beginning of my career. I was trying to tell them that I held a record, memories that went back further in time than their memories, memories of Jacques that are inextricably tied in with a few names of poets: symbolist poets of France, and Dante and T. S. Eliot, precisely those poets I have been trying to teach to American students during the past fifty years. The history of that record I hold, which put me in a special spotlight I enjoyed in that Atlanta meeting, is made up of phases. As I mentioned them in an effort of recollection, my listeners might have believed them chance encounters, chance happenings, juxtapositions of the same names that return persistently. But I do not really believe in chance. Chance does not explain the pattern, the design of my life, which I am still trying to see and understand. The name of Jacques Maritain was never mentioned in any of the college courses I took as an undergraduate. Two of my professors might have referred to him Andre Morize and Irving Babbitt but they never did. However, in 1932-33, when I was a graduate student at Harvard and an instructor in French there, I heard Jacques's name first mentioned in" @default.
