- W2024136618 abstract "The basic principles of the genetic code are universal. It is therefore logical to assume that the principles of the operative key to this code should also be universal, thus valid for prokaryotes as well as eukaryotes, for unifacial and bifacial cells. Gene expression is controlled by factors operating at the level of DNA/RNA and by cytoplasmic (epigenetic) ones. We formulate the hypothesis that the long sought for basic idea underlying epigenetic control of gene expression is the ability of cells to drive ionic fluxes, neutral or electrogenic ones, through themselves and especially through that part of the cell where transcription takes place. This ability is inherent to a largely ignored or neglected property of cells, namely the non-uniform distribution of ion pumps/channels in the plasma membrane and perhaps also in the nuclear envelope. Many cell types can be considered miniature electrophoresis chambers, with all the inherent properties. The genetic information being identical in all nuclei of the somatic cells of metazoans, their nuclear activity is different probably because all these cell types drive different ionic fluxes through themselves. The origin of this tissue-specific distribution of combinations of ion pumps/channels is quite simple: asymmetrical cytokinesis during cleavage." @default.
