- W2024152001 abstract "The aim of this project was to investigate the role of EBV reactivation in upper respiratory illness in elite swimmers. Fourteen male swimmers were monitored for symptoms for 30 days during an intensive training period. Unstimulated whole saliva was collected before and after 12 training sessions during this period. SIgA was measured by ELISA and EBV viral reactivation by RT-PCR using primers to the conserved regions of the herpes group viruses with restriction enzymes to distinguish EBV, CMV, HSV1 and HSV2. The EBV serolgy status of each swimmer was determined prior to the study. 11/14 (79%) swimmers were sero-positive for past infection with EBV. Viral EBV was detected in saliva on one or more occasions for 7/11 sero-positive swimmers (64%). Upper respiratory symptoms (URS) were detected in 9/14 swimmers (64%), all of whom were EBV sero-positive. There was a significant association between EBV sero-positivity and URS (p = 0.027). There was no correlation between the detection of viral EBV and URS (p = 1.00). However, the time course of events indicated that EBV reactivation occurred 6–10 days prior to the appearance of URS and was associated with low levels of SIgA. There was a small SIgA response to the appearance of viral EBV and a significant SIgA response post the appearance of URS (p = 0.012). The post-URS response peaked on average 6 days post the URS and returned to baseline approximately 11 days post the URS. Alterations in T-cell function allowing latent viral shedding of EBV may be a contributing factor to the URS associated with some episodes of upper respiratory illness in elite athletes." @default.
