- W2024154326 abstract "Abstract Investigations during the last 50 years have shown that we are connected to distant space and time not only by our imagination but also through a common cosmic heritage: the chemical elements and their isotopes (B2FH, Cam57, Fow84). The metallic elements (carbon to uranium) were created in fusion reactions of smaller atoms in the hot interiors of remote and long vanished stars over many billions of years. This is referred to as stellar nucleosynthesis. The smaller atoms themselves (H, He and Li) were formed prior to star formation in the early universe, called primordial nucleosynthesis. Although impressive progress has been made in both fields, the grand concept of elemental nucleosynthesis will not be truly established until we attain a deeper and more precise understanding of the many nuclear processes operating in various astrophysical environments. The desired cross sections of the nuclear processes are among the smallest measured in the nuclear laboratory, often requiring new technologies and long data collection times with painstaking attention to background. The laboratory approaches in studying charged-particle-induced nuclear reactions are the subject of these lectures (for neutron-induced reactions, see lectures by G. Schatz)." @default.
