- W2024163679 abstract "Scholars usually classify motets according to the number of voices employed, the language of the texts in the upper voices, or both.' Particularly since the work of Friedrich Ludwig, terms such as 'bilingual double motet', 'Latin triple motet' and 'French two-part motet' have achieved unchallenged status in the secondary literature.2 While these generic terms now seem indispensable, classification by the number of voice parts, in particular, leads to problems when attempts are made to establish more specific sub-genres for motets with French texts, using terms such as 'refrain motet', 'motet ente', 'refrain cento', 'Kurzmotette', 'rondeau motet', or 'motet with terminal refrain'.3 A motet ente, for example, can be a piece involving from one to four voices, and it is often difficult to know whether the term applies to the whole composition or just to a single voice. Much the same could be said of the elusive refrain cento, though here the complexities are of a much higher order. In contrast, the term 'rondeau motet' can be shown to apply to a composition rather than to a single voice part. It is, however, difficult to codify the style of the thirteen surviving compositions considered rondeau motets when such a large proportion of them exhibit divergent characteristics. An exploration of this stylistic inconsistency forms the basis of this article." @default.
