- W2024171027 abstract "The Molecular Basis of Human Canceredited by W.B. Coleman and G.J. Tsongalis, Humana Press, 2001. $145 hardback (588pages), ISBN 0-89603-634-0The astounding rapidity of advances in our understanding of the molecular basis of human cancer is without doubt the key characteristic of modern oncology. Sadly, we are still waiting for these advances to be translated into benefits for the majority of our patients. Now, the first clinical successes of generally available pharmaceutical products resulting from this vast research effort are beginning to persuade even the most jaded clinician that the wait will have been worthwhile.Any textbook trying to deal with a subject as huge as the molecular basis of human cancer will, by definition, be out of date before publication. The editors have therefore wisely decided to commission a series of concise, well-referenced and authoritative updates of key areas by acknowledged leading lights in the field. Books like this fill a niche by providing the essential background information for interested but non-specialized readers. These books have a brief shelf life and require frequent updating. The early sections of the book are well written, orthodox accounts of the building blocks of molecular oncology. The final two sections review the molecular basis of major tumour types and probable future developments. They achieve the rare distinction of appealing simultaneously to physicians who need to understand the key scientific advances in their field of clinical expertise and basic scientists who want an understanding of how their labours will be applied to mankind outside academia. These two groups of people traditionally have not mixed easily.Generally the book is up to date although strangely does not comment on the development of STI 571 (Glivec) that has revolutionized the management of chronic myeloid leukaemia. Although, the budget production will make this book affordable for a wider audience, I think that Humana Press should be persuaded to invest a little more in the presentation of the book that has daunting steppes of unbroken text. The rather sparse line drawings and diagrams are informative and helpful. This book will be of interest to the increasing number of investigators working across the borders of basic science and clinical medicine. The excellent chapters on the molecular biology of human tumour systems alone justify the purchase of this book. Future editions would benefit from better presentation and a weather eye on the fast-expanding field of molecular oncological pharmaceuticals.Published online: 10 April 2002" @default.
