- W2024197354 abstract "Abstract Pest problems have become evident on wheat in the Sudan following the steadily increase of the cropped area. A study of pest incidence at Shambat showed that aphids were the most troublesome occurring almost throughout the growth period with peak infestation during the 9th to the 11th week after sowing. Two species, the green bug Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) and the black olive green aphid Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) were identified. The first species was the most serious and its biology was described. Atherigona varia var. soccata Rond., the central shoot fly occurred as a seedling pest with a peak during the 5th week after sowing. Dead‐heart symptoms caused by the attack of this insect were clearly distinguished from dry dead‐head symptoms caused by lepidopterous stemborers ( Sesamia cretica Led.) which were found to attack mainly the last internode and peduncle. Of the non‐insect pests, wheat plants suffered severely from bird damage. The house sparrow Passer domesticus arboreus Bp. attacked the heads during time of seeds formation. Insect pests attack was less pronounced on the variety Lerma Rojo than Giza 148, but birds damage began earlier on the former variety which matured first. @default.
