- W2024222223 abstract "Oxygen and hydrogen peroxide react with a variety of hemeproteins to produce oxidizing agents of unusual capacity, selectivity and scope. The versatility of these adducts to effect chemical transformations is bewildering. The variety of reactions encountered is especially astonishing when the high degree of order and similarity in the bonding at the active site are considered. Indeed, all possess a highly ordered organometallic array, an iron porphyrin, at their active site. Although the redox chemistry of some of these hemeproteins has been established for some time, the corresponding iron porphyrin chemistry is still lagging. Recent advances in this latter field, principally in the past decade, do provide a basis upon which to frame reasonable mechanistic thought. Nonetheless, at this time, with few exceptions, mechanisms written for hemeproteins must be regarded as conjectural. The following is an attempt to use recent knowledge gained in metalloporphyrin chemistry to explain the chemical mechanisms by which the various hemeproteins perform their physiological tasks.
