- W2024223894 abstract "Questionnaires have been widely used methods to assess habitual physical activity in epidemiological study. We developed a new physical activity questionnaire (PAQ) for the Japan Arteriosclerosis Longitudinal Study (JALS) which has started to investigate relationships between several risk factors and cardiovascular diseases among multicenter integrated cohort people (more than 100,000 people among 39 sub-populations) in Japan. We reported some results of the internal validity in the past ACSM meeting. PURPOSE To confirm the external validity of JALSPAQ by comparing with pedometer. METHODS Ten percent of employees, the sample of 868 middle-aged people were randomly selected from whole employees who were participated in the other population-based intervention study (The High-risk and Population Strategy for Occupational Health Promotion (HIPOP-OHP) study. J Hum Hypertens 2004;18: 475–85). Total of 662 people (523 men and 139 women) completed JALSPAQ and wore the pedometer (EM-700, YAMASA Co., Japan) for 7 consecutive days. Total Energy Expenditure (TEE) per day was computed from JALSPAQ as the sum of the energy expended in sleep, work-related activity, commuting, home activities, leisure time activity and sedentary activities. Average and median steps per day during 7 days were calculated as the physical activity index by pedometer. RESULTS Means of TEE, the average steps and the median steps per day were 37.0±5.3 (kcal/kg/day), 9330±3096 (steps/day) and 9424±3334 (steps/day), respectively. Spearman's correlation coefficients among TEE and the average steps, the median steps were 0.38(P<0.001) and 0.37(P<0.001), respectively. We found the similar correlation coefficient of the pedometer with that of the accelerometer which we used in the internal validity study. There seemed to be dose-response relationships between the steps by pedometer and the position at work which is one of key questions to estimate TEE. We considered JALSPAQ has not only fairly good internal validity but also better external validity among manufacturing industry workers. CONCLUSIONS TEE estimated by JALSPAQ correlated with steps by the pedometer moderately. These data indicate that JALSPAQ is very useful to epidemiological study." @default.
