- W20242695 abstract "On-line chemical sensing of the environment without any operator intervention is essential for the understanding of the dynamics of chemical pollution. Conventional methods, consisting of bringing samples back to the laboratory for analysis, are tedious and very expensive. The author reports here on the development and investigation of an operator independent computer controlled station for on-line analysis of natural waters in remote areas. The station was based on a microcontroller, the Motorola MC68HC11A8, interfaced to different chemical and physical sensors, mainly coated-wire ion-selective electrodes (CWISE). The weaknesses of the sensors were compensated for by the software. The data were automatically corrected before being stored in the memory of the microcomputer. This is an absolute necessity since the raw data from a CWISE are not reliable for extended periods of time. The software for the functioning of the station was written in FORTH, a high level computer language particularly suited for data acquisition and data processing. This station was capable of collecting data, on a stand-alone basis, from eight different chemical and physical sensors for periods of days that can be indefinitely extended using solar panels. This research also involved a wide survey of problems and methods in on-line environmental analysis. more » The development of a new oxygen sensor, a new reference electrode, and a soil probe are also reported.
