- W2024287588 abstract "Abstract ‘Being’ made evident as a concrete ‘world’ offers a horizon of meaning that is given historically. As a region within such a ‘world’, human geography appears to be constrained to a horizon of mathematical thinking arising essentially out of Newtonian physics devised to describe the natural world of things. It is from such a functional and numerical tradition of mathematics that attempts have been made to move towards freer, qualitative forms to describe structural properties of the human world. These attempts, however, have immediately withdrawn back to the metric forms from which thinking was trying to escape. One problem appears to be that the intuitive concept of structure led to descriptions for their own sake, rather than for the things that might be supported and channelled by such structures. If human beings are an intimate part of such descriptions, the structures can allow or forbid, but not require. It is asserted that such properties reflect, and properly allow, human agency, and so are relevant as methodological considerations in a theory of structuration that presently, and quite consciously, brackets such issues. A parallel is drawn between the determinism of Marxian laws in the human realm and Newtonian laws in the physical realm, since the ethos of the latter constituted an enlargement of the horizon which allowed the thinking of the former. Attempts to think beyond the horizon given by the concrete condition of possibilities of our ‘world’ are noted as more bracing, though more dangerous, than thinking within the secure horizon. ... the social sciences are inescapably critical of the subject matter in which they are involved... (Anthony Giddens, quoted in GREGORY, 1984b, p.130)." @default.
