- W2024291424 abstract "AND STILL we wait... this is the third editorial I have written where I have assumed that you will have seen the government’s response to the Childcare Commission and the Nutbrown review of early years quali cations and training, and that everything I say will be of even less import than it normally is! It has been a bit like waiting outside the headmaster’s o ce, its door closed, in silence, waiting, waiting for that inevitable moment when you are called to face the music... not that I was ever in that position, you understand. So, we wait patiently, while murmurings of ‘imminent’ happenings are heard, before disappearing, lost in the machinations of government. We have had the coalition’s mid-term report, which gave us little, not even scraps. We have heard from Elizabeth Truss that changes to ratios are very much still on the agenda, despite a government-funded report due out that strongly argues against that scenario. We have heard how things are just too expensive for everyone (but mostly, I guess, for the government), and that ‘sorting’ childcare was/is/always will be a top priority (stand up please, Mr deputy prime minister)... phew! anks for that. What we have not heard, however, is any concrete plan, whether positioned as revolutionary overhaul or more predictable convoluted tinkering, that will ‘sort out’ childcare, or whether that means all of childcare, just childminders, some childminders and some nurseries, or something entirely di erent. I take it the education side is already ‘sorted’, with the revised foundation stage, if you don’t include the response to the Nutbrown review, which itself will be very interesting given some of the comments from Elizabeth Truss regarding a possible Gallic in uence on any forthcoming announcement. ere seems to be an insinuation that increasing the number of children that can be cared for by one person will lead to better value, excellent care and better quali ed sta . Am I alone in needing more explanation of this process? And is it just me, or has it not been made entirely clear (and perhaps that is just the way comments have been reported), whether this ratio change is just for childminders, or for all early years sta . What also seems to be on the agenda, is the notion of ‘hubs’ – not agencies, hubs (see Penny Webb’s article on pages 24-26). It would seem that, under this model, all childminders, and some of the ‘poorer performing’ nursery settings, could well be assessed, trained and perhaps even regulated by ‘better performing’ nurseries or children’s centres (those that have survived the cull). So childminders, it would appear, still seem to be seen as ‘second-class’ carers in government circles – important ones, of course, even vital, but just not as good as the better nurseries. Feeling motivated? Quite where the better nurseries would nd the time, money, sta and inclination to take on this task, one can only wonder, though I would pleased to hear from you if you think this is an idea that you would run with. All will become clear, I suspect. Editor Neil Henty MSc eye@markallengroup.com" @default.
