- W2024333207 abstract "It is known that maximal oxygen uptake is associated with body size, especially fat-free body mass (FFM). However, there are limited published data concerning the relationship between maximal oxygen uptake and total and regional skeletal muscle (SM) mass. PURPOSE To investigate the relationship between MRI-measured total and regional skeletal muscle mass and maximal (peak) oxygen uptake (Vo2max) during treadmill running and arm cranking ergometry. METHODS Six male college swimmers volunteered for the study. Oxygen uptake was measured using an automated breath-by-breath mass spectrometry system. Contiguous MRI images were obtained from the first cervical to the ankle joints (1-cm slice thickness, 0-cm inter-slice gap), from which SM cross-sectional area as well as total SM volumes were determined. SM volume units (liters) were converted to mass units (kg) by multiplying the volumes by the assumed constant density for skeletal muscle (1.04 kg/I). Body density was measured by hydrostatic weighing with simultaneous measurement of residual lung volume by oxygen dilution. Body fat percentage was calculated from body density. FFM was estimated as the difference between total body mass and fat mass. RESULTS Vo2max (absolute and relative to FFM) was 3.851/min and 63.1 ml/kg/min for running and 2.741/min and 45.1 ml/kg/min for arm cranking. Vo2max per unit total SM mass was 146.9 ml/kg/min for running and 105.1 ml/kg/min for arm cranking. There was a positive correlation between total SM mass and Vo2max during running (r=0.84, p < 0.05), but not in arm cranking (r=0.62). Running Vo2max per unit lower body SM mass (259.4 ml/kg/min) was similar to the arm cranking Vo2max per unit arm-upper trunk (i.e., arm, shoulder, and chest) SM mass (277.6 ml/kg/min). There was strong correlation between running Vo2max and lower body SM mass (r=0.90, p < 0.02), but not between arm cranking and arm-upper trunk SM mass (r=0.65). CONCLUSION Vo2max per unit working SM mass is approximately 260–270 ml/kg/min in the college swimmers." @default.
