- W2024348274 abstract "Abstract Selected results of a survey of oil contents in brine discharges from 10 offshore Louisiana oil production platforms are presented. Tests identified significant differences in oil content, soluble oil, and efficiency of oil separation from brine at different platforms. Differences were also noted in the performance of gravity separators and flotation units. Introduction Oil must be removed from produced brine before the latter can be disposed of in the Gulf of Mexico. Systems employing gravity separation followed by flotation are widely used in the Gulf for this purpose. This paper covers systems of this type. A survey was conducted to characterize brine effluents with respect to oil content, and to identify factors affecting oil contents. The approach was to run 10-day field surveys on 10 individual platforms. Special tests were used to determine if the oil was soluble or dispersed in fine droplets in the water. Treatment system design and operating data were recorded for correlation with the brine/oil data. The survey was supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with the cooperation Protection Agency (EPA) with the cooperation of five major oil companies. SURVEY PLAN The 10-day test program on each platform included 40 gravimetric and 20 infrared oil content tests on the brine effluent. Tests were run also at upstream points in the system. Other tests run on the brines for correlation with effluent oil content were: soluble oil, oil-drop-size distribution, suspended solids, surface tension, ionic analysis, pH, specific gravity, and temperature. Crude oil tests included: specific gravity, surface tension, boiling-point distribution, and temperature. Records were kept of the following operational factors: water cuts, lift methods, pressures, chemical-addition programs, and hydraulic loading of water-treating units. A laboratory was set up on each platform so that most tests could be run immediately after sampling. All systems were operated in their normal manner without adjustment for the test survey. The operator's regular oil- and water-treatment programs were not varied for the survey. Samples were taken at about two-hour intervals each day. PLATFORM SELECTION PLATFORM SELECTION The objective was to select producing platforms which represented a wide spectrum of factors affecting oil content. Technical criteria used to select platforms included: oil treatability, lift method, water cut, process complexity, chemical addition, gravity-separator type, flotation-unit type, and flotation-unit hydraulic loading. Table 1 presents a listing of characteristics of the platforms selected for the survey. The selection of platforms with easy, medium, and difficult-to-treat brine was based on reports of previous experience by the operators.
