- W2024396936 abstract "The application of resource mobilization theory to Poland's Solidarity movement helps in understanding the structure and dynamic of authoritarian socialist societies. A focus on mobilization — defined as ‘the process by which a unit gains significantly in the control of assets it previously did not control’ ‐ permits the identification of assets (or resources) available to a movement. These include a membership, labour, facilities and equipment, access to the mass media, and access to power. The underlying question is: where do the resources necessary to the development of a movement come from in a communist‐ruled society plagued by shortages? In Poland, a variety of groups and organizations were able to link together and provide Solidarity with its needs as a movement. The Polish experience indicates, first, that groups must be considered real political actors in any analysis of elite—mass relations in Poland, and that this phenomenon should be carefully considered in its application to other East European societies as well. Second, rigidly structured authoritarian systems breed grassroots activities, as citizens seek to take care of their daily needs by establishing social networks to circumvent bureaucratic rules; such grassroots networks can, in turn, lend their support to the mobilization of resources by a social movement. Third, Marxist‐Leninist governments may be as vulnerable as others to the development of movements from below when they themselves have cleavages within their ranks or when they experience economic crises." @default.
