It is shown that the basic features of the results obtained may be explained by a simple model where rapid axial rotation (τr ⪡ 10−5 sec) of the entire phospholipid molecule and rapid lateral diffusion occur above Tc, whereas below Tc the axial rotation remains, but the lateral diffusion is restricted. A theory is presented that accounts for the angular dependence of the linewidths of the 31P NMR spectra of the oriented lipid systems in the gel and liquid-crystalline phase, using a second-moment formalism." @default.
