- W2024459005 abstract "M Resulting in part from discussions of cultural imperialism, EFL teachers are becoming more sensitive to the issues surrounding the use of culturally loaded texts (see Clarke, 1996; Modiano, 2001). In addition, schema theory points to potential difficulties for L2 readers with texts containing unknown information, especially cultural content (see Carrell & Eisterhold, 1987, p. 223). For these reasons, some researchers have recommended that English be taught using texts on subjects familiar to students. Others have suggested that teachers use literature from learners' own cultures (e.g., Koh, 1985; Paulston & Bruder, 1976; Post & Rathet, 1996). Although these arguments may be valid, teachers should not conclude that texts based in the learners' culture always result in better learning. This article reports preliminary data from research into selecting reading materials forJapanese learners of English. In this study, after reading an English translation of a passage from a Japanese novel, students who did not know the source recalled the content significantly better than those who knew the source. The results raise questions about the role that cultural content and background knowledge play in reading. Various explanations are postulated, including possible overuse of top-down processing and influence of affective factors such as lack of interest and reading anxiety." @default.
