- W2024496329 abstract "Six obese women (29–56 yrs old, 23–45kgs over ideal body weight) participated in a medically supervised very low calorie diet (VLCD, 520 kcal/d, 50g pro, 79g CHO, 1g fat) program for 16–32 weeks. The mean weight loss after completion of the VLCD was 27kg. Assessment of fat distribution by computed tomography (CT), adiposity by bioelectric impedance analysis, aerobic fitness (Power 150 submaximal bicycle ergometry), and other metabolic parameters were made prior to and upon completion of the VLCD and 8 weeks after refeeding. Fat area as measured by CT significantly deceased by 47%–57% in the humerus, chest, thigh, abdominal visceral, and abdominal subcutaneous sections upon completion of the VLCD. This loss of fat was maintained 8 weeks after refeeding. Fat loss was generally uniform at all sites measured with no significant change in the abdominal visceral to subcutaneous ratio. Similarly, body weight, body mass index, adiposity, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total serum cholesterol and fasting blood glucose levels decreased significantly following the VLCD program. Aerobic fitness significantly improved following the VLCD program and was maintained after refeeding. These results support the use of VLCDs for individuals with severe obesity and that fat loss appears to be uniformly distributed in these individuals." @default.
