- W2024563207 abstract "The Joy of Geography Teresa L. Bulman Presidential Address delivered to the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers, 66th Annual Meeting, Portland, Oregon, September 20, 2003 There is a large body of literature on the geography of viticulture (grape-growing) and enology (winemaking), beginning with the writings of the French geographers Dion and Enjalbert (Enjalbert 1983; Dickenson 1990). American geography publications have entered the field with a wide array of authors contributing articles to the Annals of the Association of American Geographers (Weigend 1954; Morris 1969), Geographical Review (Agnew 1946; Stanislawski 1977; Peters 1984), Yearbook of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers (Crowley 1989; Bulman 1991), Journal of Geography (de Blij 1983a), Economic Geography (Dobby 1936; Hewes 1953), Southeastern Geographer (de Blij 1987), and so on. The result is a demonstrated competence of geographers to contribute to the scientific and cultural studies of viticulture and the physical and human processes that impact the wine industry. As fascinating as that literature is, it is not viticultural geography per se that I would like to address tonight. Rather, I want to focus on how becoming and being a geographer has not only prepared each of us to become expert in our particular subfields but has enhanced and informed our personal interests and hobbies. In my case, that interest is wine. This enhancement of our personal lives is not only geography's gift to us, it is an attribute of the discipline that we should share with our students, encouraging them to use their newly acquired geographic skills both inside and outside the classroom. So my discussion this evening of this joy of geography will encompass three elements: first, a little bit of personal narrative to explain how my own interest in the geography of wine emerged; second, to illustrate, using some major themes from a number of subfields of geography, how one's personal interest (such as a wine hobby) is [End Page 9] enhanced in a variety of ways by a knowledge of geography; and finally, I will conclude with some observations on the role of this professional/personal nexus in geography education. The Wasteland Before Geography My interest in wine existed long before my interest in geography. Maybe it is genetic; my great-grandfather was a barrel-maker. More likely it was because, like many high school and college students of my era, I read a history and literary canon that included the writings of the Founding Fathers and a whole host of poets and novelists, many of whom referenced wine in one manner or another. To give you just a few examples: • From the Founding Fathers: Thomas Jefferson noted that Wine brightens the life and thinking of everyone (Firestone n.d.), and Benjamin Franklin said, Behold the rain, which descends from Heaven upon our vineyards, and which enters into the vine-roots to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy (Workman Publishing 2002). • From the literary world: Emerson observed that God loves fermentation just as dearly as vegetation (Firestone n.d.), and Ernest Hemingway wrote that Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the natural things of the world that had been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range of enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing which may be purchased (Firestone n.d.). So, as you can imagine, my interest in wine was piqued. However, due to certain legal constraints, like being under age, I had limited opportunities to sample the grape until near the end of my college days, when on my 21st birthday I hitchhiked to the nearest corner store (a Food Mart) and selected a bottle from their rather ambitiously titled Wine Cellar. The bottle I selected was a cold duck or pink pagan or some such rotgut—not an auspicious start to my exploration of viticulture. Over the next several years, while in law school, I had neither the time nor the money to expand my knowledge of wine, but I do [End Page 10] remember sharing an occasional bottle of bubbly with friends, usually because an exam or moot..." @default.
