- W2024573066 abstract "Although VO2max tests yield the highest degree of accuracy in measuring cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) levels they are expensive, time consuming, require skill from trained personnel, and possible medical supervision. Due to the limitations involved with direct CRF testing, submaximal, and non-exercise tests have been developed. Submaximal prediction tests, or field tests, provide relatively good estimates for predicting maximal oxygen consumption outside of a laboratory. These field tests are useful when testing large groups of people in a time- and cost-efficient manner. Although submaximal tests are not as precise a measurement as maximal graded exercise tests, they are considered to be valid predictors of CRF. PURPOSE To cross validate a submaximal, 1.5-mile fitness test for college age students, who chose to walk, jog, or run the given distance (Larson). METHODS Forty-nine college students (men = 22; female = 27), ages 18–29, volunteered to participate in the study. Each participant completed a maximal graded exercise test, and two 1.5-mile endurance tests. For both endurance tests, participants were instructed to maintain a “somewhat hard” pace (level 13 on the Borg scale) and to follow the “talk test” throughout the test. RESULTS Dependent t-tests evaluated the differences between the prior work by Larsen and the current results regarding the heart rate monitored and non-monitored tests. The following regression equation was cross-validated: VO2max = 65.4 + 7.71 * gender (1 = male; 0 = female) - 0.159 * body mass (kg) - 0.843 * elapsed exercise time (min; walking, jogging, or running). The current study found that the heart rate monitored and non-monitored 1.5-mile endurance test was r = .93 and SEE = 3.05 ml·kg−1·min−1 and r =.92 and SEE = 3.26 ml·kg−1·min, respectively. CONCLUSION This submaximal 1.5-mile endurance test is an accurate predictor of VO2max or aerobic capacity. It also serves to teach and reinforce college age individuals of all fitness levels about some simple methods of monitoring intensity." @default.
