- W2024587688 abstract "The mechanism of parturition is well-characterised in sheep in which activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis involves increased secretion of fetal corticotropin-releasing hormone, adrenocorticotropin releasing hormone and cortisol. Cortisol then acts on placental enzymes with a resultant decline in progesterone output and an increase in oestrogen production. These changes in the steriod hormone milieu facilitate enhanced prostaglandin and oxytocin secretion that drive the contractions of labour. Elements of this mechanism are present in human parturition but major differences exist, e.g. cortisol does not induce the same enzyme changes in the human placenta. Nevertheless, many of the changes in hormones that are seen peripherally in sheep occur at a more local level (i.e. within the feto-placental unit) in human parturition. This is true especially for oxytocin which is now known to be produced by the fetal membranes and decidua. Overall, the major consistent finding in the onset of labour among most animal species is an absolute requirement for enhanced uterine production of prostaglandins. Administration of prostaglandins will induce labour or abortion at all stages of gestation and administration of prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors will delay the onset of labour and lengthen the induction-abortion time interval. Prostaglandins seem to be involved also in the preparatory events required for the onset of labour." @default.
