- W2024644987 abstract "1107 The aim of this study was to evaluate in healthy, elderly individuals the action of insulin on the suppression of plasma FFA and to determine whether participation in an exercise program influences the antilipolytic effect of insulin during a standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). A 75g OGTT was performed in an exercise trained group ≈24Hr after a typical exercise training session (ACT) and after 10 days of inactivity (IA), and in 8 sedentary controls (CON). The exercise group participated in a 3 d/wk walking program and 2 d/wk strength program for 8 months prior to the testing. Percent body fat, BMI, and waist-to-hip ratio were similar between the CON and EX groups. Ten days of inactivity did not affect weight,%fat, BMI or waist-to-hip ratio. Fasting levels of plasma glucose (ACT: 83.6 ± 4.3; IA: 91.9± 3.5 mg/dL), insulin (ACT: 6.9 ± 0.9; IA: 11.7 ± 3.3μU/mL) and free fatty acids (ACT: 0.53 ± 0.07; IA: 0.68 ± 0.08 mEq/mL) were significantly higher in the exercise group following 10 d of inactivity. Fasting glucose (100.1 ± 7.5 mg/dL) was higher in CON compared to ACT and IA. Fasting insulin (9.9 ± 1.5 μU/mL), and FFA(0.68 ± 0.09 mEq/mL) of CON were significantly higher than ACT but were similar to IA. The area under the glucose and insulin curves were significantly greater in the CON group compared to the exercise group in the ACT and IA conditions. The area above the FFA curve was significantly less in the CON group compared to the exercise group in the ACT and IA conditions. Ten days of inactivity resulted in an increase in the area under the glucose (12%) and insulin (24%) curves and a decrease in the FFA (13%) curve. The results of this study demonstrate that 10 d of inactivity results in a significant reduction in insulin action, possibly on both muscle and adipose tissue. In addition, habitual exercise appears to improve insulin's ability to suppress plasma FFA and possibly lipolysis." @default.
