- W2024700906 abstract "This article begins by pointing to the fact that current postcolonial literary theory often utilizes a surprisingly non-materialist theory of texts. Texts appear to be their own agents and are invested with extraordinary power in terms of which they can 'create obedient subjects'. They likewise 'circulate' and 'proliferate' creating meanings, effects and subjectivities as they go. How these processes occur is never made particularly clear, and instead this 'teflon' approach slides over the workings of publishers, printers, booksellers, schools, reading practices and the like. This article argues that one way of out of this impasse is to focus on the text as a material object. Once we take this as our analytical field, we are forced to describe much more precisely how, and in what forms texts are circulated, how they are taught and how their meanings are determined, not prior to their circulation but in the social arenas of their dissemination. These ideas are examined in relation to John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress , a text which was translated by Protestant missionaries into eighty African languages. The article sketches briefly how and why the text spread into the continent and then looks in detail at how missionaries disseminated the text. Mission proselytisation was generally undertaken in bits and pieces as missionaries experimented with different forms and media in their attempt to attract audiences. In keeping with this method of working, The Pilgrim's Progress was disseminated in a wide variety of forms which included choir services, sermons, wall charts, postcards, dramas, pageants and magic lantern shows. These fragments were taken up in existing African literary traditions and various instances of this process are examined." @default.
