- W2024731660 abstract "African American patients and other patients of color are seeking cosmetic surgery in increasing numbers. The surgeon’s understanding of the different nuances of the aging process and modified surgical approaches to this population will ensure the best results. This article discusses the author’s thoughts on facial rejuvenation in patients of color. The literature on medical and surgical approaches to the aging face in African American patients is scarce. This is because of several factors, including a perceived lack of interest in cosmetic procedures by this population, lack of personal experience and expertise by physicians, and the relatively few African American practitioners in the cosmetic field. These perceptions are fueled by the belief that most—if not all—African American patients develop hypertrophic or keloid scars. Despite this fact, recent trends demonstrate a growing interest in cosmetic procedures by African American men and women. The changing demographics of the United States supports the continued need for research and development in this area. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, by the year 2050 the majority of Americans will be people of color. It is therefore important that facial plastic surgeons, cosmetic surgeons, and dermatologists have a better understanding of the differences, similarities, and desires of this growing population of patients." @default.
