- W2024752021 abstract "Inhibition of the photosynthetic CO2-uptake in ivy leaves (Hedera helix L.) after heat stress is due to an impairment of the photosynthetic processes in the chloroplasts (BAUER, 1978). For a more definite evaluation of the site of heat damage, the activity of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.39), the Hill reaction, and the ultrastructure of the chloroplasts of ivy leaves were studied after a 30 min-heat stress at various temperatures. Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase proved to be an extremely heat-stable enzyme which was inactivated only when the leaves were necrotically damaged. However, the Hill reaction was heat-sensitive. When the Hill reaction was reduced to less than about 50 Ofo of its full activity after heat stress, a linear correlation exists between the inhibition of this reaction and that of the whole-leaf photosynthesis (net photosynthesis). When the Hill reaction was inhibited more severely there is a deviation from this relationship: photosynthesis was completely bocked, although the Hill reaction exhibited about one third of its full activity. An explanation might be provided with the help of electron microscope photographs which show alterations in the chloroplast envelopes after severe, but not necrotically injuring heat stress. This destruction of the envelopes may lead to an impairment of compartimentation, especially with respect to the stroma enzymes. Heat inactivation of the Hill reaction and the ultrastructural alterations were reversible as long as the heat stress had no necrotically injuring effects. The Hill reaction of heat-hardened plants was inactivated immediately after a heat stress at 46 °C to about the same extent as that of non-hardened plants.
