- W2024844579 abstract "Abstract Two cases of language impairment subsequent to striato-capsular stroke in young women are presented. Both had circumscribed infarcts to the basal ganglia and internal capsule, documented with CT and SPECT imaging. The lesion in Case 1 extended into the head of the caudate, whereas in Case 2 it did not. The patients were examined for cognitive impairments during the three stages of recovery [Alexander, M. P. Clinico-anatomical correlations of aphasia following predominantly subcortical lesions. In Handbook of Neuropsychology , Vol. 2, F. Boller and J. Grafman (Editors). Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1989]. Language and other cognitive deficits were considerably more marked in Case 1 than in Case 2. Cognitive recovery was more rapid and complete in the second case, although there was persistent motor impairment of the right hand. Both cases showed reduced blood flow in the left basal ganglia and frontotemporal regions at 6 months post-onset. These findings highlight the functional distinction between pathways of the head of the caudate vs the head of the putamen." @default.
