- W2024889566 abstract "0210 Accurately measuring energy expenditure is critical in quantifying the impact of physical activity, and great efforts have been made to develop practical field devices to measure energy expenditure. Besides counting steps, a new feature of estimating energy expenditure has been recently added on pedometers. The NL-2000 pedometer (NEW-LIFESTYLES) is such an example. The accuracy of energy expenditure estimation using pedometers, however, has not been well established. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of energy expenditure estimation of the NL-2000 pedometer at different levels of physical activity by comparing the estimates against those measured by the metabolic cart, a criterion measure. METHODS: Twenty-one students (mean age in years = 24.9, SD = 5.0; 8 males and 13 females) were voluntarily involved in the study. The participants were asked to walk or jog for 10 min on a treadmill wearing NL-2000 pedometer on the waist at 53.6, 107.2, or 160.8 m/min, respectively. Energy expenditures were obtained by NL-2000 pedometer and metabolic cart (ParvoMedics). Pearson correlations and paired t-tests were performed between two measures. The alpha level was set at .017, adjusted by the Bonferroni technique. RESULTS: The results showed that there were moderately high correlations between two measures (r = .59, .84, and .71 at 53.6, 107.2, and 160.8 m/min, respectively). The NL-2000 pedometer, however, tended to overestimate energy expenditure against energy expenditure measured by the metabolic cart at all three levels (t = 13.08, 13.23, and 3.71 at 53.6, 107.2, and 160.8 m/min, respectively; p< .017). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the results support the potential use of NL-2000 pedometer in estimating energy expenditure. Some modifications on the estimation formula of the device may be necessary to compensate for the overestimation of energy expenditure." @default.
