The electric-field effect can be explained by a shift of the splitting parameter $E$ of the $D$ tensor which is given by ${R}_{1E}=(1.10ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi{}0.07)ifmmodetimeselsetexttimesfi{}{10}^{ensuremath{-}4}$ ${mathrm{cm}}^{ensuremath{-}1}$ for $|stackrel{ensuremath{rightarrow}}{mathrm{E}}|=1.7ifmmodetimeselsetexttimesfi{}{10}^{7}$ V/m, where ${R}_{1E}$ is comparable to an induced ${B}_{2}^{2}$ term. Calculations on the basis of the equivalent-even-field theory, however, gives induced splittings, which are too low. This is probably due to the fact that for these calculations we have only taken into account contributions due to the Kiel mechanism; relativistic contributions as proposed by Parrot have been neglected. Using an electrostatic calculation we have evaluated the crystal-field parameter ${B}_{2}^{0}$ and it turns out that the electrostatic model is probably not a very suitable model for the system LaCl: ${mathrm{Gd}}^{3+}$." @default.
