- W2024951362 abstract "Hypercholesterolemia was produced in young baboons by feeding either a high protein and fat diet (HPF) or 2% cholesterol (HC). Compared with animals fed a normal monkey diet (N), the main effect of the HPF diet was to increase both LDL and HDL by 35%; total cholesterol (TC) in LDL but not HDL was increased. With the HC diet LDL was increased 3-fold and HDL by 40%, both LDL-TC and HDL-TC being increased. Terbufibrol (20–200 mg/kg) was active in lowering serum TC in animals on all 3 diets, but the extent of cholesterol reduction varied in the order HC > HPF > N (max. reductions: 154, 80, and 70%, respectively). Clofibrate (200 mg/kg) decreased TC by a maximum of 28% with the HPF-diet and 13% with the N-diet but was inactive with the HC-diet. Cholestyramine (400 mg/kg/day) was inactive in HPF-fed animals but reduced TC in HC-fed animals by 45%. With the HPF-diet nicotinic acid (200 mg/kg) was inactive. Terbufibrol lowered HDL, HDL-TC, LDL, LDL-TC and LDL-TC/PL in animals fed HPF-diet. A greater decrease of LDL-TC occurred with increasing dose. The main effect of clofibrate (200 mg/kg) was to reduce HDL and HDL-TC and to increase LDL. Whilst cholestyramine and nicotinic acid both reduced LDL-TC, only the latter increased HDL-TC. It is concluded that the baboon is a useful species for the investigation of potential hypolipemic compounds but effects on human lipoproteins cannot be predicted with any certainty." @default.
