- W2024973040 abstract "The connecting cilia of retinal rods of albino rats were studied by customary and high voltage electron microscopy after ruthenium red staining. The cytoplasmic fibrils appeared in different ways. Nine doublets of microtubules and microfilaments connecting the microtubules with the cilium membrane appear as relatively light structures covered with material which binds ruthenium red strongly. A short bar projects inward from subfiber A of the doublet microtubules, showing a similar appearance. In addition, two single microtubules appear in the core and possess considerable inherent density as well as the intermicrotubule links. An extensive peripheral axoneme is seen, different from those of typical cilia. These special features, which differ from those of motile cilia, particularly the well developed microfilament system between the doublet microtubules and the cilium membrane, suggest special functions of the connecting cilium, perhaps related to the formation of discs in the outer segment." @default.
