- W2025090352 abstract "The adsorption of arsenate [As(V)] and arsenite [As(III)] by an allophanic andosol was investigated with respect to the isotherms at pH 5.0, the effects of pH, and desorption using other anions. SOILCHEM estimated that almost all of the As(V) and As(III) existed as HAsO42− and HAsO2, even in the concentration range from 0.0001 to 0.1 mol L−1 (M) for the 0.01 M sodium perchlorate background solution at pH 5.0. The maximum adsorption of As(III) estimated from the Langmuir adsorption isotherm was somewhat higher than that of As(V), although the As(V) adsorption was greater than that of As(III) in the low concentration range. No H+ consumption was found for any of As(III) adsorptions, suggesting that the occurrence of ligand exchange reactions, together with H+ consumption in the adsorption, did not occur. For the As concentration of 0.5 mM, the adsorption of As(V) by the soil was constantly about 100% at pH <7.0, whereas the adsorption decreased with the increasing pH at pH >7.0. In contrast, As(III) adsorption by the soil increased with the increasing pH over the experimental pH range (pH 3-9). A small portion of the adsorbed As(V) (15%-20%) was released by 0.1 M sodium nitrate and 0.05 M sodium sulfate, whereas a high As(V) (60%-70%) was extracted by 0.033 M sodium dihydrogen phosphate and 1 M of hydrochloric acid. In contrast, 30% to 45% of the adsorbed As(III) was desorbed with the nitrate and sulfate extractions, whereas the desorption by the phosphate and hydrochloric acid extractions was 15% to 30%, and 20% to 30% remained as a residue. Based on these results, the difference in the adsorption mechanism of As(V) and As(III) is discussed." @default.
