- W2025101367 abstract "The career of Horton Foote, one of America's most prolific living writers, spans six decades and over 135 works in theater, film, and television. Perhaps best known to the general public for his Academy Award-winning screenplays for To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) and Tender Mercies (1983) and the Academy Award-nominated The Trip to Bountiful (1985), Foote has made equally notable contributions to the worlds of stage and television. He originally trained as an actor and in the 1930s was one of the founding members of the American Actors Company, for which he wrote his first play, Wharton Dance, at the suggestion of cofounder Mary Hunter. His success at playwriting during the 1940s led to his work for television in the 1950s, the so-called Golden Age, when he wrote both original teleplays and adaptations for such shows as the Goodyear Theatre, Philco Television Playhouse, and Gulf Playhouse. Working alongside other young writers such as Paddy Chayefsky, Gore Vidal, and Rod Serling, Foote enjoyed rich collaborations with producer Fred Coe; directors Delbert Mann, Vincent Donehue, and Arthur Penn; and actors such as E. G. Marshall, James Broderick, Dorothy and Lillian Gish, Joanne Woodward, and Kim Stanley during this pivotal period in the history of television. It was during this time that Foote wrote his first screenplay, Storm Fear (1956), which was followed by both original screenplays and adaptations of his own and others' works, including the Academy Award-nominated films mentioned above. Even as he is noted for his participation in the development of American theater and television, Foote is celebrated for his pioneering contributions to independent filmmaking, beginning with the filming of his Orphans' Home Cycle plays in the 1980s. His stature in the film world is suggested by the fact that [End Page 64] in 1989 he was selected to be one of the American Film Institute's first three recipients of an honorary doctorate." @default.
