- W2025194916 abstract "Of greatest current interest is a class of thermotropic mesomorphic compounds containing a long aromatic core and a strongly polar end group (CN or NO2). A considerable variety of phase diagrams have been experimentally and theoretically described by the Bordeaux group1−3). The first conclusion was to challenge the uniqueness of the smectic A state and consequently to divide the smectic A phases into different basic groups depending on the layering arrangement. Another point of interest of these polymorphisms was that multi-reentrant nematics or intermediate 2D states often separate two smectic A phases. Although these 2D mesophases possess a long range modulation inside the layers, they remain smectics with liquid-like ordered layers at short range. Finally, such anomalies of periodicity have been recently observed in other LC classes: 1) peculiar electron donor-acceptor systems with a polymorphism of smectic A phases at low temperature; 2) nonpolar systems with liquid crystalline side-chain polymers." @default.
