- W2025485933 abstract "Icing on aircraft usually happens in water clouds which are supercooled between 0°C and −13°C, have a liquid water content (LWC) between 0.02 g/m3 and 0.8 g/m3 and consist of droplets which have a median volume diameter (MVD) from 9 μm to 300 μm. As shape and intensity of the icing depend on a combination of meteorological and icing structure parameters, it is not practical to take into consideration all of them in a simple forecaster's instruction. The better way is the idea of a Computer Assisted Aircraft Icing Forecast to calculate the ice accretion at the most important profiles of the aircraft. To demonstrate a practical solution, reduction to a specific case based on parameters to be easily determined and concentration to one type of aircraft is necessary. Extension towards a universal icing forecast method is expected. As a first step, the icing hazard of a helicopter rotorblade in a low stratus layer is calculated. The parameters LWC and MVD were calculated by empirical formulas, considering the results of in situ observations in low stratus by DLR-Research Aircraft DO 28. The icing profile is simulated by a cylindrical rod. A sufficiently precise ice accretion calculation can be done using the model of Lozowski et al. (1979)." @default.
