- W202556723 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the metabolism of sex steroids in the bird central nervous system (CNS) and pituitary. The interaction of sexual steroids with the anterior pituitary gland and the CNS may be the basis of the feedback control of gonadotropin secretion and the control of the sexual behavior. One of the possible biological roles of the testosterone metabolites in the quail was established by an in vivo study. The feedback effects of testosterone, androstenedione, and their 5α and 5β reduced metabolites was investigated in chronically castrated male quails maintained in long days and after injecting the birds with the various steroids, blood samples were taken 3, 6, 9 and 24 hours after the injection. Following the injection of testosterone or androstenedione, a fall in the plasma LH occurred between the third and the sixth hour, and significantly depressed levels of plasma LH were maintained up to the 24th hour. After 5α-DHT, 5α-3α-diol and 5α-androstanedione, the plasma LH concentrations at 6 hours were also decreased, however, in the case of these steroids, the effect was shorter because the plasma LH levels returned close to normal at 24 hour. No changes in the plasma LH were found following the injection of 5β-DHT, 5β-3α-diol or 5β-androstanedione." @default.
