- W2025656799 abstract "Abstract 1. 1. Although the upside-down catfish becomes pale during the night and when it is exposed to a white background, the ventral skin of the fish seems darker than the dorsal skin. 2. 2. In the ventral skin, smaller melanophores are distributed at high density, whereas larger pigment cells are sparsely distributed in the dorsal skin. 3. 3. The minimal effective concentration of norepinephrine (a true transmitter) for the aggregation of pigment within ventral melanophores is higher than that for aggregation in dorsal melanophores. 4. 4. In the ventral skin, adenosine (a co-transmitter), beta-agonists, and alpha-MSH induced melanosome dispersion more effectively than they did in the dorsal skin. 5. 5. These morphological and physiological characteristics are considered to be appropriate for the maintenance of the darkness of the ventral skin, which may be profoundly associated with the fish's unique habit of swimming upside down." @default.
