- W2025883793 abstract "Abstract Soybean plants 18–21 days post germination received acute doses of 3·75 or 11·25 krads of gamma radiation from a 60Co source. Using infrared gas analysis, rates of net photosynthetic CO2 uptake were measured at 21% and 1% oxygen prior to and 5 min to 4 hr following irradiation. At both radiation doses reductions occurred in the rates of net photosynthetic CO2 uptake without significant changes occurring in the rates of CO2 evolution in the dark. Furthermore, the extent of the reductions were similar at 21% and 1% oxygen and no differences in stomatal aperture or leaf diffusion resistance were observed between the irradiated and unirradiated plants. These observations suggest that the reduced rates of CO2 uptake are the result of a radiation effect on the photosynthetic apparatus and not due to increased stomatal resistance or to accelerated CO2 evolution from light or dark respiration. In addition, shoot growth, leaf expansion and new leaf emergence were monitored during a 10-day period following exposure of the soybean plants to radiation. Reduction in the rate of shoot growth and leaf expansion were evident even at a dose of 750 rads." @default.
