- W2025895955 abstract "Treatment with psychotropic and anticonvulsant drugs is common in mental retardation, with prevalences ranging from about 20% in nomastitutiooalizeď children to about SO to 60% in institutionalized populations. The major types of drop used in mental retardation were described and four (roups, the neuroleptics, anticonvulsants, anti-anxiety drags, and cerebral stimulants were singled out for further discussion. The question of rationale was raised, and it was suggested that the main objectiveof pharmacotherapy is that of supperessing a wide variety of acting-out behaviours. This was followed by a discussion of extreme attitude sometimes expressed by workers in the field regarding the propriety of drug treatment A brief summary was presented of some of the clinical research findings on neuroleptic, anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, and Next, the work of a very influential research group working in Caidwater, Michigan was discussed in considerable detail. This group has produce a number of controversial reports suggesting that die most commonly used medications may actually impede the treatment or development of mentally retarded patients. Certain difficulties with tins work were identified as well as a lack of independent research support from other centres, and it was suggested that judgement regarding the role of pharmacotherapy in this field should not be overly influenced by these reports. Finally, a number of factors that may be hindering drug research with mentally retarded subjects were identified and this was followed by overall conclusions." @default.
