- W2025920797 abstract "On the determination of optical constants of films in multilayersJ.A. DobrowolskiDivision of Physics, National Research Council of Canada Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, K1A OR6AbstractDifferent strategies are illustrated that can be used with the inverse synthesis method for the determination of the optical constants of coating materials. There exist dozens of methods for the determination of the optical constants of coating materials, and hundreds of articles describing them. The method of inverse synthesis to be described here uses the programs developed at the NRCC (and described elsewhere in these proceedings) to derive n and k from spectrophotometric measurements. During the calculations the thicknesses of the individual layers and the constants of dispersion equations are varied until a good fit is obtained between the experimental E and calculated C data. These calculations are controlled by means of a merit function M.The accuracy of transmittance and reflectance measurements performed on commercial equipment is rarely better than 0.5 to 1% . To overcome random measurement errors, as many readings as possible are incorporated in the merit function. The sensitivity of the method can be greatly enhanced by incorporating layers of the multilayers. Particularly powerful is the use of asimultaneous calculations on several systems consisting of m-^ , incorporating films of the unknown material:unknown material in suitable merit function which permitsm layers each, andM = + «m ." @default.
