It’s with great pleasure that I accept the prestigious Lindgren Award—particularly here in Seattle, for two reasons. Firstly, the close proximity to Vancouver has allowed me to catch up with many friends and colleagues from MDRU and UBC, many of whom are here today, but it’s also because back in 1994, this was the first international conference I ever attended, and it was here I met many people who would later have a great influence on my career. Furthermore, it was an opportunity to see at first hand the importance of the SEG and indeed the Lindgren Award, when I was sitting in the audience of an SEG luncheon as an innocent Ph.D. student listening to one of the many outstanding geologists who have received this award. At the time I thought, I’d like one of those, thanks.But it has been an exciting path that has led me here. My interest in geology was inspired through growing up in Cornwall, England, surrounded by Cornish engine houses, pits, and tunnels that I and my faithful dog would spend hours exploring. I was fortunate to be able to study geology at high school under the enthusiastic teaching of Mr. Patterson at Newquay Tretherras school before moving on to Cardiff University, Wales.
