- W2026190922 abstract "This important work by Michael S. Goodman, a leading intelligence historian, studies Anglo-American intelligence assessments of the Soviet Union in the Cold War. Goodman's study uses previously classified records to study, in a new way, how the West understood (and misunderstood) the Soviet threat in the decades after 1945. Goodman's study reveals that, to build up a picture of the Soviet Union, western intelligence agencies relied on both technical intelligence, such as signals intelligence (Sigint), imagery intelligence (Imint) and aerial reconnaissance, as well as more traditional methods of human intelligence (Humint), namely agents and defectors. Western intelligence services often assessed these forms of intelligence through ‘mirror imaging’: they attempted to predict what they would do if they were in the position of their enemies. Goodman's study reveals that when Anglo-American intelligence assessments of Soviet ‘weapons of mass destruction’—a phrase which was used by western intelligence assessments at the time—were at their best, they relied on a mix of technical intelligence and human intelligence. Human agents often provided intelligence which even the best forms of technical intelligence could not. Clearly there are some valuable lessons here for intelligence services today." @default.
