- W202622415 abstract "The interpretation of seismograms is mainly devoted to the art of identification of various types of seismic waves (phases) that appear on seismograms and often generate a rather complex structure. Correct identification of recorded phases with respect to travel paths through the Earth opens to any research using observational seismic data. The appearance of a seismogram reflects the combined effects of the source, the path of propagation, the characteristics of the seismograph, and the ambient noise at the recording site. This chapter considers the presentation of seismograms from tectonic earthquakes. Some of the most important characteristics of seismic waves includes: (1) different waves travel with different velocities, (2) different waves are polarized in different ways, and (3) various phases are characterized by their amplitude, period, and dispersion. The propagation of seismic waves through the Earth's interior is governed by exact physical laws similar to the laws of light waves in optics. The classification of seismic events is based on the distance between the event and the recording site, which in turn governs propagation paths along which seismic waves travel through the Earth's interior." @default.
