- W2026382480 abstract "These days we need to work harder to attract students to study soil science because they have a somewhat dry and dusty, or a muddy and smelly, image of soil science, especially of pedology, but this stereotype can be far from reality. Forensic soil science represents a developing discipline of soil science, and has matured to the extent that well-defined questions and successful crime scene investigations can be answered in increasingly refined ways. Here we briefly review the history of forensic soil science and the reasons why soil materials are considered to be powerful, perhaps ideal, pieces of contact trace evidence. To illustrate the power of forensic soil analysis, we have selected one case study where pedological expertise was used to help solve a highly complex double murder case in Australia by identifying the similarities between soil and clay assemblages on a shovel and from a quarry. To show the significance and educational value of forensic soil science, we highlight the development of an interactive exhibit, which succinctly explains how pedologists and mineralogists successfully used soil morphology, soil chemistry, soil survey, and clay mineralogy (using X-ray diffraction, XRD) expertise to help solve this double murder case." @default.
