- W2026396554 abstract "Surface sediments have been collected from the Chupa Estuary (Russia) prior to ice formation in September 1995 and after ice melting in May 1997. Metal concentrations (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn) were determined in the <63 μm and >63 μm grain size fractions following a two-stage sequential extraction, which removed non-detrital and detrital metals. In the <63 μm fraction, the mean concentrations of total Fe (54 to 75 mg g−1) and Mn (940 to 1910 μg g−1) were relatively high, possibly due to inputs from a Muscovite mine in mid-estuary. The range of total concentrations of Cu, Pb and Zn in the <63 μm fraction were 18–26, 17–20 and ∼95 μg g−1, respectively, which are below established background values and about 19% of Cu and Zn and 6% of Pb was in the non-detrital phase. Elevated concentrations of Cd were recorded in the detrital component of the <63 μm fraction for summer and spring (4·7±4·5 and 2·0±1·7 μg g−1, respectively), probably as a result of the industrial use of Cd-based pigments. There were only minor changes in the percentage of non-detrital Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn between the two surveys and an increase in the proportion of non-detrital Cd and Pb in spring 1997. The metal concentrations in the bodies and stomach, plus contents, of blue mussels were relatively low with the exception of Cd. The sediment metal concentrations reported here are relatively low and form a baseline against which the impact of anthropogenic development in the region may be measured." @default.
