- W2026399156 abstract "Reconstruction of palatal defects has traditionally been accomplished with a prosthetic obturator 1 Aramany M.A. Basic principles of obturator design for partially edentulous patients. Part I: Classification. J Prosthet Dent. 1978; 40: 554 Abstract Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (134) Google Scholar or local palatal flaps. 2 Genden E.M. Lee B.B. Urken M.L. The palatal island flap for reconstruction of palatal and retromolar trigone defects revisited. Arch Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2001; 127: 837 PubMed Google Scholar Although prosthetic obturation represents a simple and effective choice for the management of limited defects because it allows for immediate functional dental rehabilitation without the necessity for a second operative site, the management of a prosthetic obturator can represent a difficult problem for the elderly. Such patients frequently have a compromise in manual dexterity and/or poor eyesight, making it difficult to manage placement of a prosthesis. Furthermore, it is often difficult to maintain vigilant daily prosthetic hygiene; as a result, patients often experience crusting and malodor. Commonly, elderly patients complain of the social stigma associated with a prosthesis and express frustration with having to wear a prosthesis to perform such simple tasks as answering the telephone or drinking a glass of water. Such limitations can have a negative impact on a patient’s quality of life." @default.
